1. Definition of Health
We agree with the World Health Organisation’s definition of general health (ref 1) as “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
This state of wellbeing means that you enjoy optimal foundational health. All of youis in balance and you are properly nourished on cellular, molecular, biological, mental, emotional, sexual and spiritual levels.
When you have optimal foundational health the likelihood of degenerative disease and aging is reduced.
So if you’re looking for the ‘Secret’ to vibrant health, well-being and anti-aging, look inside you first!
Forget superficial symptomatic quick fixes. Rather, nurture, nourish and love yourself by making lifestyle choices which invigorate and motivate you at every level to be your very best.
That means, your attitude, diet, supplementation, exercise, environment, work, and relationships need to be balanced and in sync with your passions and purpose. When you’re ‘firing on all cylinders’, nothing can stop you.
Aging gracefully’ becomes the norm and degenerative disease the exception.
Before we look at how to age gracefully, let’s be clear about what exactly degenerative disease is, and its relationship with aging. This will lead us to preventative measures.
2. What is a Degenerative Disease and its Relationship with Aging?
A degenerative disease (ref 2) is characterised by the slow but sure deterioration of the function or structure of tissues or organs. This gradual deterioration may be due to normal bodily ‘wear and tear’, or poor lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, smoking, stress, etc., or both.
Well known typical degenerative diseases include Alzheimers, Parkinsons, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and cancer.
Some experts (ref 3) even class aging as a degenerative disease because both are characterised by slow, systematic wide deterioration.
We disagree with this view.
We believe that aging is not a disease but a natural part of life. You cannot reverse aging (yet). But you can help to slow it down and enjoy aging gracefully in vibrant health by making wise lifestyle choices.
Degenerative diseases are often contrasted with infectious diseases. An infectious disease, as the name implies, is a transmissible or communicable disease where symptoms result from the infection, presence and growth of pathogenic biological agents like viruses, bacteria, parasites etc. in the individual.
Typical infectious diseases include malaria, tuberculosis, lower respiratory infections and meningitis.
We have suggested that robust foundational health and wellness are possible at any age, once all your core systems and processes are balanced and in harmony. This results in a hugely reduced risk of degenerative disease and aging.
Indeed, we believe that aging is not a ‘disease’ but a normal part of life, whose speed and severity is largely determined by you. Your lifestyle choices will be the key determinant in how you age. The next blogs in this series will illustrate how.
