Green Lipped Mussels are a veritable superfood for joints, helping reduce stiffness, improve mobility and manage inflammation. Commonly recommended for those suffering from arthritis and other joint-related concerns, Green Lipped Mussels can help support your dog’s joint health.
What is Green Lipped Mussel?
Found only in the pristine waters around New Zealand, Green Lipped Mussels are arguably one of nature’s most complete whole foods, rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins and Omega 3 fatty acids which can help improve joint health.
How it can help your dog?
Just as humans can be troubled by arthritis and joint pain as we age, so too can our canine friends. Over time, dogs naturally lose the connective tissue and cartilage that surrounds joints, leading to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. Green Lipped Mussel powder (GLM) contains nutrients such as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) which can actually rebuild this connective tissue and help dogs maintain supple, healthy joints. GAGs are the principal components of cartilage and the fluid found in joints, and when taken regularly, can help promote flexibility and elasticity within the joints.
GLM also contains Omega-3 Fatty Acids to help replenish the moisture in your dog’s cartilage, supporting inflammation management, easing discomfort and promoting joint mobility.
Backed by science
A number of studies have demonstrated GLM’s ability to improve joint health in pets. One study followed 31 mixed-breed dogs with varying degrees of arthritis. The dogs were randomly selected and placed into two groups. Both groups were fed the same diet, with one group also having 0.3% GLM powder added to their daily diet. After six weeks, the group given the GLM-enriched food had a noticeable reduction in joint pain and swelling. This study provides evidence that when GLM is incorporated into a dog’s diet, it can help alleviate arthritis symptoms.
So how do you actually give your dog GLM?
Ok, so we know that GLM can improve your dog’s joint health…but how do you actually get them to take it? The best way to give your dog GLM powder is to sprinkle it on their food.
How much GLM powder do they need? There are a couple of factors to consider when determining the right dosages of GLM for your dog: their size and the severity of their joint symptoms.
A simple guide to follow is 15mg of powdered extract per 1 pound of your dog’s body weight. That said, if your dog is experiencing significant joint pain and reduced mobility, and you do not see an improvement in symptoms within 3-4 weeks, you should increase their dosage by 1 or 2mg. As your pet’s health improves, you can then reduce the dosage again within a couple of weeks.
Before giving your pet GLM powder, or any other supplement, it’s important to speak with your vet.
The best GLM powder for your dog
There are many different brands of GLM powder on the market, so it’s important to choose carefully. Xtend-Life’s GLM powder is a high strength, 100% pure powder that offers a higher concentration of both GAGs and Omega 3 fatty acids than other Green Lipped Mussel supplements – meaning it delivers more powerful anti-inflammatory and joint-rebuilding benefits.
Xtend-Life’s Green Lipped Mussel powder is derived from mussels sourced from New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds and harvested under strict conditions to ensure sustainability, safety and traceability. These mussels are then freeze-dried at low-temperatures for maximum freshness to ensure all the benefits are locked in.

A review from Noemi about Xtend-Life Green Lipped Mussel Powder:
It helps my dog so much!
Our vet gave us the dog version of this but said we could order the human grade. Since my malamute is 118 lbs., it is cost effective to buy the human grade. This really works!! He has mild hip dysplasia and this helps him to walk again. We were so worried he would never be able to walk again, but so glad this helped!!! THANK YOU!!!
