Top Five Regrets Of The Dying

There has been an email doing the rounds lately about an Australian nurse called Bronnie Ware who has put together a book based on her experiences caring terminally ill patients with 12 weeks or less to live.

The book - titled ‘The Top Five Regrets of the Dying’ - discusses a very poignant point...regret. At the ripe age of 31, I find myself saying “I wish I knew what I know now when I was younger” more and more every day.

This ‘wish’ pales in comparison to the many ‘wishes’ uttered by those in Ware’s book.

If you haven’t received the email or read the various news clips about top five regrets she encountered, here they are:

1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard.
3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings.
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

You often hear the cliche... “Live a life without regrets” but how many of us actually follow through on this?

We all know our time on this earth is limited to a specific number of years...actually how much is unknown. However, you can certainly help improve the probability of living a longer, more productive life without regret by putting a few things in front of your queue of priorities.

Here’s my ‘Top Five Ways To Avoid Dying With Regret’:

  1. Good health is vital: The best way to ensure you do all the things you want to do is to live longer so you have the time to do them. Considering many degenerative diseases are preventable, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to prioritize your health.
  2. Love and be loved: Human beings are social creatures and family, friends and interpersonal relationships stimulate our emotional wellbeing to the point that it gives us a sense of being, self-worth and fulfillment. If you’ve been too busy lately to enjoy those people close to you, stop whatever you’re doing and interact with the people who put a smile on your face.
  3. Work and Play: The age-old saying that ‘good honest work never hurt anyone’ is true...it gets you moving, thinking and doing stuff your body was made for. Like relationships, it also gives you the sense of self-worth...regardless of what you’re actually doing. The same goes for recreation and doing things you love doing. A bit of work and play everyday is a fine blend of the right stuff you need to enjoy life and avoid lying on your deathbed riddled with regret.
  4. Stand up for yourself, for your beliefs and what’s right: At the end of the day, speaking your mind in a respectful, honest and confident manner is by far one of the best things you can do for yourself. I truly believe this. Society and the ‘PC police’ have unfortunately minced away from this basic human right, depriving people of their own internal voices and forcing their silence with fear and shame.
  5. Be a teacher and a student throughout your life: You’re never too young to dispense advice and you’re never too old to learn something knew...it’s all up to you and how you choose to give or take the lesson.
Remove regret from your life today by making a list of everything you regretful about and start making them right...the clock is ticking and there’s still so much living to be done!

It makes you think that is for sure. Keeping in contact with your friends, loving someone, enjoying that cup of coffee with that special someone, having God in you life and letting other people know that he/she makes a difference in your life, enjoying your work everyday but know when to call it quits, take a vacation on a regular basis and transend some kindness to someone in your daily life. That about sums it up. Now go make a difference in someone’s day and start living today( the present) It isn’t called present for nothing. Tomorrow doesn’t matter. It is all about the here and now. Well what are you waiting for! START LIVING NOW.

TIM,

Please . . . spare us. It’s very doubtful Moses even existed.

@ Wally I hope youre having a good day. Having said that, reading your post was not unlike the folks I meet every day. I must rebut most of what you said, piece by piece. I dont do it to say your stupid on the contrary. In my life, when I meet folks that hold your beliefs, those guys are some of the most intelligent folks I know, and Im sure youre just like them. Youre a smart dude with a human brain that just cant quite wrap its knowledgebase around the reality you call Blind faith, therefore, you reason, it must not be real.

I can’t believe the number of people that seem to dwell on BLIND faith.Homo Sapient has been around for no less than 60000 years.Australian natives date back 20-30000 plus years.

This is the first fact that needs to be challenged. What source is it that you are referencing to date these theories? Certainly neither of us was around 60,000 years ago to know for sure. The method used to come up with these figures is most often Carbon 14 dating a method only correct when the source material has NOT been tampered with in anyway and the ratio of 14C to 12C (two different types of Carbon that are used to make Carbon 14 dating work) in the atmosphere is the same both when the item died and when it is tested. Carbon 14 dating becomes inaccurate as soon as the amounts of 14C and 12C are no longer in the same ratio as when the test subject ceased to live. The change in the ratio of 14C and 12C will throw the projected date of the test subject off by thousands, or even tens of thousands of years. According to my view of the creation of the universe, ALL test subjects that existed prior to the World Wide Flood and that have been dated this way have been tampered with by the change in a ratio of 14C to 12C since the World Wide Flood (Which you will be quick to say just a rip-off of the Gilgamesh epic and it is not, I assure you. The account of Noahs flood is older than that story, which I believe was a rip off of Noahs history) which will cause the dates to be consistently incorrect. Dating modern or more contemporary items has proven this fact. Furthermore, it is impossible to Carbon 14 date anything older than 80,000 years (if anything can be that old) another technology should be used to date items suspected of being older than 80,000 years since at this threshold, C-14 dating is inaccurate.

Abraham lived about 5500 years ago and his knowledge was limited to personal observations of his surroundings. Along with some stories of his immediate ancestors dating back no more than 2000 years- when he penned a theory of how the earth was formed and how mankind was created.

Interesting that you say Abraham penned a theory of how the earth was created. A few years back, folks on your side of this debate didnt even think that Abraham could write, let alone be the scribe for God. As archeology uncovered more facts about his time period, the widely held believe that Abraham couldnt write has been unceremoniously dropped. Just a side note, how much of your personal family history do you recollect going back say, oh 400 years? Im assuming not too much. Abrahams stories dating back more than 2000 years (I dont think it goes back that far) is a pretty good concession for you to give Abraham.

That puts the Adam and Eve story as first humans created out of the mud of the upper reaches of the Nile sad indeed. ( If you study his story a bit more closely you’ll find that the first woman was supposedly made out of the same stuff as Adam and her name was more like Lilliyh of Elloith but she was not in vogue with the Hebrew culture of woman’s place in a man’s world so he asked Yahweh to get rid of this babe and make one more amicable to his listeners. His rib was plucked and EVE was the result – now being the lesser than the man and was accepted as OK by his pals.)

Adam was created from the dust of the ground (not mud) near the Euphrates, and Tigris rivers in Iraq, not near the Nile. The statement above is mixing Gnosticism with mystical Judaism and really isnt a good attempt to disprove the existence of Adam and Eve its akin to discrediting a valid charge on a credit card (True Adam and Eve existence) statement by claiming talking dogs (non extant fictional character) stole your card and charged dinner on it as they passed by the postman (makes little sense) Lilith did not exist anymore than the Easter Bunny. God created Eve to be mans companion, and his help mate not to be inferior to him but to complement him. Eve fulfilled Adam and completed him. Misuse and ill-treatment of women in the past may have been erroneously justified by the bible, but it certainly isnt demonstrated by its scriptures.

His story of how the water was split from the land and into the heavens was another hoax. However where else could the rain come from if GOD had not put the water up there?

Now here youve got me wondering what exactly youre talking about are you talking about the firmament and the waters above the heavens and the waters below the heavens? If so, what hoax do you know of that I do not? Is there not H20 here on earth as well as water vapor in space? Arent scientists looking for water on Mars and on asteroids and wherever else they can find even a vapor? Sounds like the vast expanse of space (heavens) might contain some water that was separated form that which has been accumulated on the earth. Furthermore, dont we have clouds that contain water vapor and cause it to rain? The word translated firmament in the KJV has been more accurately translated canopy in later translations of the Holy Bible. Im confused by your statement are you inferring that rainfall is a hoax? I experienced it first hand on my way to work this AM! For the record, the creation account does not allow for rain. There was no rainfall until the flood, so Abraham was not attempting to explain the origin of rain.

Then there was the SUN which was the light for the day and a lesser light for the night sky! He had no idea that the moon has no light of its own and is a reflector only from the sunlight.

Abraham did not indicate that the moon emitted its own light. Where does he say that it made its own light? When one looks upon the moon, does it not shine light upon the face of the earth no matter its source? Taking into consideration your earlier concession, I must appeal to the knowledge of Job, whom, writing before Abraham was born said He (God) stretcheth out the north over empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. Interesting that Job knew the earth was not flat and was suspended in space! Furthermore, the creation account you reference does not indicate that the moon generated its own light. It only states the fact that the moon is the lesser light when compared to the sun. In your statement, you are saying that the Sun is the light for both day and night (reflected off the moon of course). Your statement is in complete compliance with scripture – again – nowhere does scripture infer that the moon made its own light. It only states the fact that its light is LESSER (not as bright) than the light of the day.

Years were measured in barley yields. A year was divided into months – with no idea that the earth went about the sun in about 365.25 days to make a year. The Jewish calendar still holds the year to monthly cycles – corrected every 19 years or so to get back on track to present convention.

Jesus was a Rabbi- no more no less. A human- no more no less. I have to admit he was kind and generous. I also can wager a coffee that if he were to ride in on a donkey, dressed in a cloth robe- trying to get across the border into USA, he would end up in Guantanamo or be a candidate for rendition.

Jesus WAS a Rabbi AND Messiah the Son of God. For claiming to be the Son of God, he was crucified. The accounts of His miracles, death and resurrection went unchallenged back in the day they happened. To me, and most reasonable folks, this fact alone is proof that Jesus was who He said He was. Somebody, anybody from that time would have stood out with something to say if His story and life were a hoax, yet there is not one bit of historical evidence that suggests this at all. It is only in modern times that His deity is doubted. If, in three or four generations from now, we lose the video and photographic evidence of the Holocaust in Germany before and during WWII, ignorant people could claim that horrific time never happened. Given the same amount of time and loss of evidence, one could claim that JFK was assassinated with an arrow and people would believe it especially if the people have been told this new info by somebody with a few extra letters after their name.

Don’t act so high and mighty and dream of an eternity. You are right however, parts of you will exist forever. Subatomic particles drifting through our universe until it collides with another one creating a collision like the Big Bang we talk about which occurred 13.8 billion years ago, and starting life anew in a new Universe. Live healthy and enjoy it. Religion has directly caused more deaths of humans than any plague or virus or cancer. A smile, a handshake, a hug among all mankind is the universal religious belief. So go green and eliminate wasteful resources on weaponry. Lets live as Jesus would have lived with a private jet and yacht or space ship at his disposal. I do believe he would have held up his principles.

I hope this has not come across to you as high and mighty for I am neither. Your bold and faithful statement of no hope for an eternity seems to be emanating from a high and lofty place though! I am but a lowly human doing what I can do with the time Ive been given on the face of this great earth. The notion of eternity is one that must be taken on faith. I cannot prove to you its existence any more than you can disprove it to me. As archeologists dig more up from the holy land and prove day in and day out that the stores in the bible were fact, my faith is reinforced. In fact, the book of Job speaks of dinosaurs long after man forgot about them (yes, I believe we existed WITH those land beasts) and well before we dug the first fossil up just a handful of decades ago. The age of the universe, as you put it at 13.8 billion years, is not old enough to accommodate the big bang, earths formation AND the evolution of life on this planet. As more and more is discovered in biology and archaeology, the age of the universe is pushed back further and further as well as the age of the earth.

Now, as for religion directly causing more deaths than any plague, virus or cancer this is a fact that is unchallenged. People have misused faith and in its name justified the slaughter of millions of humans throughout history. However, just because of the grave mistakes of our ancestors we should not abandon the tenants of the Christian faith. I must add, in the name of communism millions of folks were slain just as today, millions of unborn children are slain because some folks think women have the right to kill their offspring as long as it doesnt age too much in the womb (no God involved in those murders huh?) but thats another topic for another day. When fully understood (and its not that hard) Christians are to love one another, our enemies and our God. Were supposed to take care of our planet, the animals and those less fortunate. Your suggestion of a smile, a handshake, a hug would do us all well. Anything I say here isnt to make you believe, but to let those reading know that folk that hold to your views do not go unanswered by either science nor critical thinking. For further reading, might I suggest the writings of Ravi Zacharias and/or William Lane Craig two fellas a heck of a lot smarter than me with the added ability to form a coherent argument!

Anyhow, I dont normally post things like this (especially on a supplement site!), but Wally got me thinking and there’s nothing wrong with that stay healthy folks and keep making great products Xtend-Life!

God Bless.

I can’t believe the number of people that seem to dwell on BLIND faith.
Homo Sapient has been around for no less than 60000 years.
Australian natives date back 20-30000 plus years.

JoAnn,
Isn’t that so true! Life would be unbearable if it weren’t for my faith in Jesus!

Joni February 17 2012

Paul,

Really? The truth is that we will live forever. And we get to choose where.

Gary February 17 2012

Would you put a Rolls Royce engine in a Mini? Then what is the point of putting a brain with the capacity to file info for thousands of years in a body that lives 70 Years? The immune system is so well designed that one doctor once stated that it is a miracle that we ever get sick in the first place. So not every one believes that the shortness of life is natural, indeed if it was, then mourning for the dead and fearing death would be considered unatural.

Robert February 18 2012

I believe the greatest regret I would have is to know I heard the truth about salvation through my Lord Jesus Christ and not have acted upon that knowledge. He is the reason I have peace and joy in this mad evil world we live in. Knowing I will be with Him when I die is the greatest joy I have.

JoAnn February 17 2012

The only regret I truly have is that I haven’t told more people about the Baha’i Faith. Sure, I regret certain decisions here and there but at present I am taking good care of my relationships and myself and have Baha’i standards to live by. I am sorry some things turned out as they did but I certainly did the best I could at the time and there are always some things for which we are sorry, over which we have no control, as the decisions lie with others in our lives.

Christi February 17 2012

Congratulations to JoAnn and Joni! Blessings.

Rick February 19 2012

I have heard of the 5 common regrets many years ago now.
There are many other regrets that could be added, no doubt. It takes courage to write a book of this sort, and more courage to read and take on the messages and act on them. I know it is difficult to teach children their future and how to live it, but if there is one message that really needs teaching it is about HOW to live, not WHAT to live.

I embrace my life. I have all the common complaints as well. Sometimes I am down, or I work too hard, or I take things too seriously. I have had to develop a little reminder to myself from time to time to get back on track. It’s free, easy, and everyone can do it. And it removes the regrets creeping in. On a medical level it also enhances our bodies by activating those parts of our brain and body that either release or enhance functions. SMILE. That’s all there is. Read the book, I recommend it. But go further and ‘Pay it forward’ a little each day. And try my trick, too.
