

Knocking back a stiff drink to help stiff joints?
According to this article, some new research has emerged suggesting that alcohol consumption can reduce rheumatoid arthritis.
However, with many communities throughout the world trying to get rid of any excuse for their locals to partake in heavy drinking, it’s concerning that such research gets published…especially considering the blatant lack of variables such as:
- No indication of how much alcohol should be consumed in order to achieve the apparent ‘anti-inflammatory’ benefits...
- No indication of how the volume of alcohol may affect the arthritis sufferers...
- No indication of the types of alcohol used in the study...
The article quotes study leader, Dr. James Maxwell as saying:
“Once someone has developed rheumatoid arthritis, it is possible that the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of alcohol may play a role in reducing the severity of symptom…
“Patients who had drunk alcohol most frequently had symptoms that were less severe than those who had never drunk alcohol or only drunk it infrequently. X-rays showed there was less damage to joints, blood tests showed lower levels of inflammation, and there was less joint pain, swelling and disability”.
There’s no denying that the study is interesting but the lack of credible evidence should hopefully make people realise that excessive alcohol consumption poses more health risks than benefits.
Sure the odd glass of wine, especially red wine, three times a week is fine and may actually be beneficial…but not a whole bottle every day. I hope common sense prevails here.
