Better Sleeping Patterns Mean Better Health
If you're having trouble getting a good night’s rest, you're not yawning alone. There are millions of people worldwide who suffer from some form of sleep disorder preventing them from either falling into a deep sleep or at least getting a minimum of five hours of continuous sleep (or both).
This disruption in your sleeping patterns is serious and should not be ignored. Your body needs sleep - especially deep sleep - to not only rest and replenish your energy levels but to also provide your body with many other benefits.
You see, the reason why deep sleep is so important is because it’s during this stage of sleep that the brain’s electrical activity slows down, along with your heart rate, adrenaline levels and yes, even your blood pressure.
In addition to this, during deep sleep, the different parts of your brain that release hormones and other chemicals that influence your blood pressure interact with each other and help control the ‘necessary’ drop in blood pressure when you’re sleeping like a baby.
However, if you aren't entering this deep sleep stage long enough or often enough, this may interfere with these brain chemicals and other brain signals that help manage your blood pressure.
In fact, unbalanced sleeping patterns and lack of sleep may even affect the immune system. Chronic fatigue and sleeplessness may harm the immune system, because sleep deprivation is linked to an increase in the molecules that control your body’s immune response, inevitably leading to inflammation.
Inflammation and changes in blood chemistry may be behind a variety of diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and depression.
It’s not surprising that researchers often find a link between a person’s sleeping disorder and any degenerative condition they may have.
This is why it’s so important to ensure you’re getting a good night’s rest, especially deep sleep. However, for some people, this is easier said than done. Various factors like anxiety, prescription medicines and drugs, alcohol, caffeine, junk food, emotional distress etc can all play a part in disrupting a person’s sleeping patterns.
Some people even resort to sleeping pills and various other pharmaceutical ‘cures’ to help address their sleep disorders. This may possibly be the worst thing you can do as the drugs may not only interfere with your body’s natural ability to fall asleep, they may even become addictive with far reaching side-effects.
Although, as bad as this may be, it’s still just half of the problem.
