3. The Problem
Today, omega-3 alone is a multi-billion dollar industry where
a majority of brand owners treat fish oil as a commodity;
typically outsourcing production to the lowest bidder.
The lowest bidder is often a large scale contract manufacturer, who is able to
undercut the competition by manufacturing large quantities at the lowest possible
This situation often results in the minimum acceptance criteria (the lowest quality
ingredients allowed) becoming the product specification, especially considering the
fact that contract manufacturers have very low margins and depend on high
volume to begin with.
Some might think of it as a perfectly acceptable way of achieving “efficient”
production; after all, the brand owner profits, and the consumer gets a cheaper
product. On the other hand, a deeper look at how this process manifests itself in
the quality of a finished product often reveals some unpleasant facts.

4. Startling Facts About The Industry
- Omega-3 was a US$1.2 billion industry in the USA in 2014 alone.
- In one study 30 best-selling Omega 3 products were tested, and 6 were found
to contain at least 30% less Omega-3 than the label claim.
- EPA and DHA levels varied between -25.3% to +32.7% as compared to what
was stated on labels.
- Non-softgel fish oil supplements contained far lower concentrations of EPA
and DHA content, likely due to the addition of inactive ingredients like fillers and
- 3 brands recorded 50% or greater of the allowable mercury content per
- 3 brands were penalized for failing to reveal the content of EPA and DHA on
their product labels.
All of these findings were limited to the top 30 best-sellers in
the market, which raises the question – how the thousands
of other products in the market would have compared.
4.1 Why Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil Is A Scam
What is “Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil”?
Pharmaceutical-grade fish oils are claimed to be the purest and most potent of the fish
oils available. Specifically, they are usually fish oils which are marketed as having:
- 80 to 90% total Omega-3 fatty acids (as opposed to around 30% Omega 3 in
many cheaper fish oils).
- High purity levels: the repeated molecular distillation required to achieve the
highly concentrated finished product is supposed to achieve a high level of
purity with almost all toxins and heavy metals, such as mercury removed.
- Exceptionally low levels of environmental toxins.
From the above, it may appear as if the term ‘pharmaceutical grade’ is an “Unofficial”
measure of fish oil quality.
This is really not true and here's why...

It is “unofficial” because “Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil” is neither an official FDA
term, nor a medical term. Critically, use of the term is also NO guarantee or
specification of any generally agreed quality or purity standard.
Sadly, this lack of any officially agreed quality and purity standards for
“Pharmaceutical Grade” Fish Oil encourages dubious marketing claims.
While we know that there is no agreed standard, fish oil is certainly being sold
claiming to be ‘Pharmaceutical grade’.
So the real question is NOT whether or not the term “Pharmaceutical Grade fish oil”
exists, but rather, does it mean anything?
4.2 How To Choose A Quality Fish Oil
For any fish oil, you need to ask whether the fish oil satisfactorily addresses these key
quality metrics, and has independent verification of:
1. Form of the oil and the DHA/EPA Ratio
4. Value for Money
We'll discuss purity and freshness in much more detail later in this guide (as well as how our fish oil stacks up)...but for now, let's look at the DHA/EPA Ratio and Value for Money.
Most fish oil products, including most of those claiming to be “Pharmaceutical Grade”, are EPA dominant, containing at least 50% more EPA than DHA.
We suggest that this is an inappropriate ratio. That’s because there is now good quality research showing that higher levels of DHA relative to EPA may lead to the greatest health benefits, particularly with regard to supporting brain, heart, blood sugar and joint heath.
Just look at a healthy mother’s breast milk. You’ll likely find much more DHA than EPA. Nature designed it that way because DHA is the real healer and caregiver.
In addition, it is difficult for the body to convert EPA to DHA because it has to add two carbon bonds. On the other hand the body only has to 'drop off' two carbon bonds from DHA to create EPA.
Given these facts about the superiority of DHA, why do you think many fish oil manufacturers aren’t increasing the DHA levels relative to EPA?
Simple! It’s more expensive and EPA is easier to concentrate. As you know, many companies are notorious for cutting corners to fatten their wallets, rather than providing you with the very best products.

5. Determining Efficacy
Fish oil is packed with a variety of beneficial nutrients including omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) ranging in complexity and functional properties. The human body cannot produce these omega-3 EFAs on its own. They need to be introduced to the body through food and dietary supplements known to contain high levels of omega-3.

Healthy Inflammation Management
One of the key properties of high quality omega-3 is its ability to support healthy inflammation management in our bodies. It is important that these properties are not compromised and that this is confirmed with independent laboratory testing. Please refer to our own example in the next section to understand how it is measured and what healthy inflammation management really means.
Fish oil must be in a form that is as natural as possible to ensure that it is bio-available (easily absorbed and utilized by the human digestive system). Marketability is an important consideration for many brand owners – but some cross the line with false or questionable claims. It is important to understand what bio-availability is and how it works. We’ve provided our formulation in the next section for a clear understanding of why this is such an important factor.
High Quality Omega-3 and DHA
A premium quality fish oil supplement must be reasonably high in omega-3 with the dominant essential fatty acid being DHA.
Purity and Source
In most cases, the presence of hazardous pollutants, rancidity or lack of beneficial properties can be traced back to the source – the fish, and the production processes.
It is important that the manufacturer is directly involved in this process and maintains transparency in relation to the source of fish and the production processes employed.
This means low oxidation levels; once again with cold, hard evidence to back-up such claims.
It is also important to understand the choice of packaging and the ingredients that some manufacturers use to mask the real quality of their products.

6. How do we stack-up?

6.1 Healthy Inflammation Management
Did you know that inflammation is a normal process that occurs in the body at all times? Despite its bad reputation, inflammation needs to get the credit it deserves.
It basically refers to the process of the immune system responding to an area in the body that needs repair. It could be a slight bump to your elbow, stubbing your big toe, inhaling pollen, developing a sore throat or cold etc...the list is very long.
In fact, without inflammation, we’d all be dead in a matter of hours. You see, the whole process of inflammation can be compared to a battlefield whereby the immune system’s ‘army’, namely the white blood cells, etc. ‘attack’ the damaged area or part of the body where a foreign object (such as an allergen, or bacteria etc.) has entered.
This is often referred to as the “up-phase” of the inflammation process.
Thereafter, as with any battlefield or fight, someone has to clean up the mess. This is the “down-phase” of the inflammation process. Macrophages and other cells associated with the immune system’s response “unit” clean up the area to bring it back to a healthy state.
This full cycle of inflammation is called immunomodulation and this refers to the overall inflammatory management process that the immune system is responsible for.
Poor lifestyle choices and anti-inflammatory drugs mess up this inflammatory management process!
Your immune system’s immunomodulation cycle is quite a delicate process, and if you constantly overload this immune response, you will likely cause an imbalance in the overall inflammatory management process...leading to chronic inflammation whereby the body is either over-attacking the area of concern or taking too long to repair and bring it back to balance.
Overloading can be in the form of poor lifestyle choices such as eating junk food, smoking...even poor posture and sitting at your desk over time can induce chronic inflammation to some degree.
Some people will resort to anti-inflammatory drugs to solve the problem but in fact, this actually makes the problem worse! Remember, you want to make the inflammation process efficient and complete, not suppress it altogether!
You need inflammation to occur in order to help the body repair and heal itself. Therefore, it makes sense to support the immune system and its inflammatory management process as much as possible.
Fish oil helps maintain immunomodulation and supports the body’s immune system to ensure the inflammatory management process is as efficient as possible.
So, when assessing how ‘natural’ fish oil is, it is important to know about the different forms currently available on the market.
Ethyl Esters vs. Triglyceride
The human digestive system is among the most efficient power plants known to man. In essence, our digestive system has the ability to extract a staggering variety of fuels from an equally large variety of food sources.
For all of this to work as intended, we need to identify what our system readily recognizes and uses from hundreds of thousands of years of dietary habits and evolution. A little more scientific way of describing it - food particles that our digestive system is familiar with and able to utilize are said to be bio-available to the body.
Bio-availability is influenced by the molecular shape of fatty acids, sugars, proteins, and other nutrients that are easily absorbed by the body.
When it comes to fish oil, the benefits associated with it can only start taking effect once the body has absorbed the nutrients contained within it. The more natural the molecular structure the better.
6.2.1 Regular fish oil comes in a triglyceride form. This is the oil that you get when you ‘squeeze’ the fish and extract the natural oil from it. The downside is that it usually has low overall omega-3 content because it is not concentrated and generally has high levels of contaminants such as heavy metals (mercury), PCB’s and dioxins etc.
6.2.2 Ethyl ester oil occurs when you take natural triglyceride oil and concentrate it using a process called molecular distillation. This process is also very effective at eliminating contaminants. However, the concentration process cannot take place until the fish oil is converted from natural triglycerides into ethyl esters. The ester form is still in a semi-natural state because it is the result of a process that naturally occurs in the body to allow for bio-availability. It is common to double, triple or even quadruple the omega-3 content of fish oil using this concentration process.
6.2.3 Synthetic triglyceride oil is another form of fish oil that is very common and it is often marketed as ‘natural’ when in fact it is not natural. It is a triglyceride, but it is not a natural triglyceride. It is produced after concentration. As mentioned above, the natural triglycerides are converted to ethyl esters for concentration. This is perfectly acceptable. However, some manufacturers then re-convert the esters back into triglycerides – a synthetic form which occurs as a result of this re-conversion process.
The original position of the triglyceride’s carbon bonds change and the molecule’s overall structure is altered. Part of it becomes foreign to what the body is used to – potentially negatively impacting the bio-availability of fish oil. Why do some manufacturers still do it? They often do this because they can “market” the products as a triglyceride form and customers usually assume it is “natural” – when in fact, it is not.
The Beauty of Synergy…

6.4.1 The Smell Test
A simple test would be to cut open a soft gel and smell the oil. If you smell anything besides a faint oceanic aroma, it suggests unnecessary processing or addition of fragrances to mask a rancid product. We are so confident that our fish oil is among the freshest in the world, that we encourage you to cut open a soft gel of Omega 3/DHA Fish Oil and smell it. You will only smell a faint oceanic aroma. We don’t add masking flavors or fragrances unlike other fish oil companies.
6.4.2 No Rancidity
Our Omega 3/DHA Fish Oil is so fresh that you are unlikely to experience any repeating or ‘burping’. If you don’t have any ailments which could compromise your digestive system, we can assure you that ‘fishy’ repeats are very unlikely. If you have experienced an unpleasant case of ‘burping’ due to a rancid product, we would strongly recommend that you try our product once. We are confident enough to give you a refund on the return of a partially opened bottle should you not be entirely convinced.
6.4.3 Scientific Measurements
Freshness can be measured by oxidation. Always look out for the total oxidation (TOTOX) value on the supplier’s Certificate of Analysis. It is made up of two components:
- Anisidine value
- Peroxide value
Some manufacturers do not publish their anisidine values and although the peroxide values may be reasonable, the overall TOTOX value can be very high. Some manufacturers only test for peroxide value after encapsulation and after an elapsed period of time.
The peroxide values in a soft gel actually go down over time but the anisidine values go up, therefore pushing the TOTOX value up as well.
It could be called a “trick of the trade” that some manufacturers use; the ‘N/A’ indication on the Certificate of Analysis may mean ‘Not Available’, it should really mean ‘Not Acceptable’ in this case.
6.4.4 Other Freshness Facts
Our Omega 3 / DHA Fish Oil has oxidation limits that are significantly lower than international standards (the lower the better).
However, the actual results of the oxidization testing are even better than the specification.
Please refer to the CoA for the actual values.
Likewise, our peroxide and TOTOX limits are lower than any international regulators and even lower than the GOED limits.
As an extra measure to ensure that freshness is maintained across the spectrum, each and every batch of our Omega 3/DHA Fish Oil is tested by independent government certified labs (for transparency, we use Cawthron Institute and AsureQuality Laboratories in New Zealand).
The following is a table that shows comparative oxidation specifications between acceptable international standards and Xtend-Life standards. All of the indicated values are absolute maximum values allowed.

8. Fish Oil and the Environment
Our Hoki fishery in New Zealand is controlled by the New Zealand government and is considered to be one of the best managed and most sustainable fish resources in the world. The total allowable catch set for New Zealand is constantly reviewed by scientists for the various New Zealand fisheries every year. The Hoki fishery is in such good shape that the government considers raising the quota levels on many occasions.
The Tuna oil which we use in our Omega 3/DHA Fish Oil is sourced only from trusted suppliers. The tuna oil does not have any impact on tuna stocks as it is a by-product of the tuna caught for food.
The tuna is put it through a proprietary purification process in addition to the molecular distillation and concentration process.
This results in levels of purity not achieved by other ‘normal’ purification processes – removing impurities such as PCBs and dioxins to a level not possible with most other fish oils.
9. More about Fatty Acids
DHA (Docosapentaenoic acid) is without doubt among the most complex and beneficial essential fatty acids (that has been isolated and studied) as far as the human body is concerned (more so than EPA) as it is a 22 carbon bond chain with six double bonds.

DHA is taken up by the brain more readily than any other fatty acid.
9.2 EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) has 20 carbon bonds. It is difficult for the body to convert EPA to DHA because it has to add two carbon bonds. On the other hand the body only has to ‘drop off’ two carbon bonds from DHA to create EPA.
9.3 DPA (Docosapentaenoic acid) – A special mention must be made with regards to another omega-3 fatty acid – DPA. Studies conducted at prestigious research institutions are revealing links between DPA consumption and lower total mortality, especially deaths related to cardiovascular diseases in the elderly.
We are following these developments and will be working towards including DPA in future variants of our products after its role is validated as a powerful nutritional and therapeutic supplement by the scientific community.
9.4 ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid) - commonly found in flaxseed oil, this omega-3 fatty acid only has 18 carbon bonds, making it almost impossible for the body to manufacture DHA from.
