Higher Magnesium Levels Linked to Healthier Arteries

If you want to support the health of your arteries and overall circulation, taking in more magnesium could be the answer, according to a new study.

Researchers from Mexico found that higher serum levels of magnesium may support healthy levels of blood pressure while helping to maintain the healthy function of arteries.

Researchers believe that the cardiovascular benefits associated with magnesium could be the mineral’s ability to support healthy inflammation management, which further supports the healthy functioning of the heart’s cells.

The findings are significant, given that heart ailments are responsible for 20 percent of all deaths in America, according to statistics from the American Heart Association.

The study, which appeared in the journal Nutrition and included a cross-section of 1,300 people, echoes previous research that has linked magnesium and heart health.

A 2000 study appearing in the journal Circulation found that daily magnesium supplements not only supported the the healthy function of the heart during exercise, but also helped boost the energy levels of study subjects, allowing them to exercise for longer periods of time.

Researchers also found that magnesium helped maintain the flexibility of the blood vessels, so they were better able to open up to allow extra blood flow when the body needs it.

Why we need it

Magnesium is vital to every cell in our body.

In addition to our heart health, magnesium is important for muscle strength, it works with calcium to ensure healthy teeth and bones, it helps nerve stay on alert and it plays a role in supporting our cells from stress.

In addition, serotonin – the feel-good chemical of the brain that supports against low moods – requires magnesium for production, so low levels of the vital nutrient could be responsible for a low mood.

“Magnesium deficiency can produce symptoms of anxiety, including muscle weakness, fatigue, eye twitches, insomnia, anorexia, apathy, apprehension, poor memory, confusion, anger, nervousness, and rapid pulse,” according to Carolyn Dean, author of “The Magnesium Miracle.”

Most experts believe that as many as 70 percent of people in the United States are low on magnesium due to a diet that skips good sources including whole grains and leafy greens. (Former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno made it no secret that he skipped veggies altogether, and didn’t eat any for decades until First Lady Michelle Obama encouraged him to try veggie pizza on his show. He is likely not alone.)

A diet high in sugar can also result in low levels of magnesium, because for every molecule of sugar we digest, 54 molecules of magnesium are used in the process.

Signs that you’re not taking in enough magnesium include:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Nervousness
  • Low energy
  • Muscle weakness or cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Weakness
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Confusion
  • Poor nail growth
  • Seizures
  • Restless leg syndrome

Low on magnesium? Here’s why

While true magnesium deficiencies are rare, there are some reasons why our levels might be low.

Certain medical conditions can upset the balance of magnesium in the body, including irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, diabetes, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism and kidney disease or long bouts of vomiting and diarrhea, which can deplete magnesium stores.

Other factors that can contribute to low magnesium levels include:

  • Drinking too much coffee, soda or alcohol
  • Consuming too much sodium
  • Experiencing heavy menstrual cycles
  • Excessive sweating
  • Prolonged stress

How can I get more magnesium?

If you want to beef up your magnesium levels, sesame seeds, spearmint, cacao, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, dill, broccoli, okra, flax seeds, spinach and chives are good sources.

Other foods rich in magnesium include tofu, legumes, black strap molasses, wheat bran and whole wheat flour, oatmeal and oat bran and seaweed.

Many herbs and spices are also packed with magnesium. Some good ones to add to your spice cabinet include coriander, celery seed, sage, mustard seeds, basil, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, tarragon, marjoram and poppy seeds.

A classic Italian pesto is a perfect way to take advantage of two magnesium-rich ingredients.

To make it, pulse 2 cups packed fresh basil leaves, 2 cloves garlic, ¼ cup pine nuts and 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil in a food processor until smooth. Season with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste, then add another 1/3 cup olive oil and process until the oil is incorporated and the mixture is smooth. Remove from the food processor and add ½ cup freshly grated Pecorino cheese just before serving.

Hi Heath,

Thank you for your comment.

We apologize for that and I will be endeavoring to look into this and relocate that comment.

We are happy to do product comparisons with our competitors and we welcome your feedback.

In general, apart from our wholefood products such as Kiwi-Klenz and Green Lipped Mussel Powder, our supplement blends contain a large number of ingredients at a lower level to supplement a healthy diet.

We want to educate our customers that while quality supplementation is important, it is even more important to partner it with good food nutrition. This is particularly the case with commonly found vitamins and minerals (such as magnesium). You will note that in most of our specialty products, we try to focus more on the rare nutrients and enzymes not as readily available in common foods.

I am more than happy to have a chat with you directly about this or have one of our team contact you. Upon location of your comment, I will also be helping put together a comprehensive product comparison to help you with any other questions you may have.

Good post.

Hi Heath,

I have managed to locate your original comment and have responded below.

"Funny how after reading this article, there is so little magnesium in your total balance mens premium. I switched to total balance mens premium for 2 months after being a long time Usana user. I noticed all the symptoms of low magnesium developed, particularly muscle cramps and low energy/fatigue. As soon as I got back on Usana recently those issues went away. I think you have a great product, but unfortunately for me your lack of magnesium has forced me to stick with Usana essentials. It’s a shame because I’d rather support your company but I want an all in one product. I shouldn’t have to buy your bone support just for extra magnesium."

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to hear that our Total Balance Premium did not work as it should for you.

We formulated our Total Balance range to be all-inclusive – the answer to simplifying your supplement regime – giving you about 6-7 different product blends in one.

Total Balance is formulated to support better health and anti-aging, and as mentioned in my previous comment, we use lower levels of key vitamins and minerals easily found in food, to make way for more elite, less-accessible enzymes and extracts. However, as we are aware we use lower levels of these commonly found nutrients, we endeavor to source the most bio-available forms in the industry. For instance, we have recently introduced a new form of marine magnesium which has shown to be much more bio-available than mined minerals.

While we have always had an overwhelming amount of positive feedback on our Total Balance, we do understand that every body is different. If you do have quite a healthy, balanced diet, but still notice these deficiency symptoms, you may be someone that has a slightly higher magnesium need than others. For individuals that do have an additional need, a booster supplement is recommend in combination with Total Balance.

I personally still think that taking Total Balance offers significant health and anti-aging benefits. This is particularly due to the significant number of ingredients in our formulations that are not present in most dietary supplements (including USANA Essentials).

I have had a look over the formulations in the USANA Essentials range and I wonder which of the range you are currently taking. If you are interested, I am happy to do a specific product comparison for you. Please contact our team with the specifics of your nutritional regime, lifestyle and diet, and they will be forwarding that information on to me.

Good way to keep a customer. I leave a comment with a concern about your lack of magnesium compared to a competitor and its just deleted with no explanation or response.

Heath March 14 2017

Hi Madelynn,

Thankyou for getting back to me.

In the Usana range I use the cell essentials mega antioxidant and multi mineral. I also use their q10 100, and grape seed proflavinol suppliment.

In your range I was using total balance mens Premium, male rejuvinator, kiwi cleanse, wh ultra and using zupafood elite.

I probably dont eat as well as I’d like but Im careful with what I eat and rarely eat takeaway or junk food.

You may be right that I may need higher magnesium levels. I exercise allot and sweat more than anyone I know. I’ve always been that way. I’ve read that sweating can lead to loss of magnesium. I cycle to and from work each day to keep fit around 30ks a day, plus I try do atleast an hr of a fairly vigourous yoga practice. On my days off I like to go for a run outside, so I’m always pushing my body because those things make me feel good.

My concern is that The Usans cell essentials are more designed for athletes and active people. They sponsor allot of athletes. Is the total balance formula more designed for couch potatoes?

I made the change from Usana to try yours because of the reviews I read online, and Usana to me seems to care more about profits and money than peoples health. Every email from them is nothing new about success stories from people using their products, or health advice. It’s just about how much money their diamond directors are making and their athlete sponsorships. I think they are overpriced, but I do have allot of energy when I use their products.

I would rather use xtend life as I like your companys vision and ethics. looking at ingredients of total balance premium over Usana, you guys seem to have way more natural and healthy ingredients. but, are your ingerdients for each extract too low to make much difference?

I went back to usana because I started to feel really run down by the time I got her me from work I had little energy. Also, if I sat still for a period of time I started to get cramps, particularly in my feet. Both those symptoms went away 2-3 days after going back to usana. I wonder if my body just better suits mega doses of vitamins and minerals like Usana has in their essentials formula?

Starting today I am going back to your total balance mens premium, ultra q, and zupafood elite to see if those symptoms I described above come back again.

The total balance premium formula has benefits over Usana. My mind feels clearer, and calmer, I sleep better, and definitely notice an increased libido.

The disadvantage for me seems to be that I dont have the same explosive energy when I cycle or run like I do when I use Usana.

Would be very interested to hear your thoughts on what could be causing me to not have the same energy from your products conpared to Usana. Have you ever done head to head tests with Usana products? Usana test against competitors but they dont give clear results to the public. They just say they are the best but don’t really back it up. Apparently their q10 100 stays in the blood at higher levels over a longer period of time compared to its competitors. Even though they use ubidecarenone, and not ubiquinol. They also claim that their vitamins absorb better than all competitors but again, nothing really to back it up.

Hope to hear back from you soon,

kind Regards

Heath

Hi Heath,

You are definitely right. When our bodies undergo strenuous exercise it increases sweat and urinary losses, which can cause magnesium stores to become depleted. However, it is interesting as looking over Usana Core Minerals, the amount of magnesium in the product is only 112.5mg, about 30% of a regular daily intake. If you do have a deficiency in magnesium, this amount would not make much of a difference. You would be better off with our Bone-Support which has 341mg in combination with vitamin K2 and marine calcium which work synergistically to enhance absorption. I also noted that Usana mainly use vitamin K1 and calcium citrate which are less bio-available.

Yes I do see that Usana feature a number of athletes on their site. It does work well as a marketing strategy, but it is not the route we choose to go down. We prefer to avoid expensive sponsorships or advertising campaigns in order to keep it all about the product. It is very important to us that our customers get their products at the best value for money possible. That is why we prefer to prioritize our budgets and invest in product research and sourcing better quality ingredients instead of extensive marketing campaigns.

It is surprising that Usana claim their ubidecarenone CoQ10 stays in the blood at higher levels for longer, without backing it up with studies to show they have tested this. As far as I am aware based on my research on this ingredient, ubidecarenone is the less effective form of CoQ10. Irrespective of what special technology they have with that ingredient, it doesnt change the fact that CoQ10 exists in the body naturally in Ubiquinol form. The body would still need to convert the ubidecarenone in order to best utilize it, making it less effective and more strenuous on the body than Ubiquinol.

We have never done head to head tests but this is definitely something we should be looking into; as we do try to equip customers with as much information as possible to help them make the best purchasing decision for their needs. I will be passing this suggestion on to the rest of the team.

Based on my initial comparison of the products, I am rather baffled. As you mentioned you have a balanced healthy diet, I do not see how these higher mineral dosages would offer significant additional benefit. I say this because majority of these mega-dose vitamins are in fact water-soluble vitamins easily found in a normal diet, and would just be excreted from the body in excess. In fact based on my comparison, you would be missing out on a vast number of enzymes, amino acids and other nutrients which are found in Total Balance but not present in your Usana regime.

May I ask how long were you taking our products for and if you were following the recommended dosages? Total Balance and Zupafood ELITE do have a number of detoxifying ingredients and some of our customers notice these detox symptoms (such as fatigue) when first taking the products. I wonder if that is what you are experiencing.

I would also suggest trying to include Bone-Support into your regime. You are right in saying that generally most individuals should not need this. However, I am curious to find out how the higher magnesium levels of this product would work for you. Do keep us updated on how you get on.

I hope my response has been somewhat helpful. Please let me know if you have any additional questions and I would like to thank you for sharing your experience and concerns with us.

In good health,

Madelynn
