I am lucky enough to work for a Nutraceuticals company, so I get access to beauty trends and information before they become mainstream.
From time to time, certain perks of my job come along - in this case a three-month trial for Skin-Support. I knew from the reading and research that I had done on collagen supplements that by taking part in this trial that I could end up with smoother tighter skin, fuller thicker hair and stronger nails.
If you read my last blog Top Five Health Tips For Women Navigating Their Fifties, you will remember that I made comment about accepting who you are – lumps, bumps and all. I do love and accept my body but I took on this challenge in the name of research.
#1. The Background.
Menopause, the rollercoaster and the wreckage!!
If like me, you are hitting your 50’s, I have one word…. MENOPAUSE and the roller coaster ride that this stage of life takes both your mind and body on.
Hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue from insomnia, anxiety, mood swings, irritability and a feeling of being invisible, which equate to a loss of confidence. While I now have this under control, the effect this has had on my derriere was lackluster skin, with lumps and bumps!
So I sat down with our research and development team, to discuss my diet, lifestyle and the state of my derriere. I wanted a win, for my confidence and for myself.
By the time we turn 50 our skin is no longer producing collagen. It is also beginning to lose elasticity, and we begin to see the more profound effects of aging:
- Skin becomes lacklustre, dull and sallow
- Deeper lines and wrinkles begin to appear, as collagen decreases
- Reduction in sebaceous activity, which causes dry skin
- Skin starts to sag, as the once resilient and flexible elastin in the dermis degenerates
The good news - is that these changes in collagen levels do not seem to be irreversible, however you need to boost your body’s collagen stores.
#3. Collagen deal breakers.
Your lifestyle choices can also greatly degenerate the collagen stores that you already have, and make you look older…quicker.
Avoid smoking, refined sugar, poor nutrition, stress (from excess cortisol), and poor hydration. Insufficient sleep also has a negative effect on skin.
# 4. Maximize collagen.
Fortunately, there are quite a few ways to help improve the look and health of your skin. Taking Skin-Support enriched with grape seed extract was my best bet, however I wanted to maximize the benefits.
I knew that exfoliation was good for my skin on my face, I have been a long time lover of our Age Defying Exfoliating Scrub. The first time I used it, the skin on my face instantly felt new, soft, silky and so much smoother. However up until this moment I hadn’t thought about using it to exfoliate my bottom!!
#5. Exfoliate to Activate.
Gentle and regular exfoliation does help to improve skin tone and texture. It also bolsters the integrity of your skin, increases cell turnover within your skin, and by removing dead cells you are making it easier for new cells to come to the surface. All of which, will help to restore it to its natural, youthful glow.
#6. How to exfoliate your body
The key is to let your skin regenerate between sessions. If you don’t, you are simply injuring your skin repeatedly. Over-exfoliation is highly stressful to the skin.
Things You'll Need:
- Exfoliating cleanser
- Body brush, loofah, or exfoliating gloves
- Body lotion
The Body Method:
- Before getting into the shower, dry brush your skin with your loofah, body brush or exfoliating gloves, to loosen and remove dead skin.
- Get into the shower and wet your body from head to toe.
- Apply your exfoliator to your gloves or loofah, use gentle circular motions, gently work your way up your body. You do not want to scratch your skin, I usually turn the shower off, and it takes me about five minutes from top to toe.
- Use a body brush to exfoliate your back and other hard-to-reach places.
- Rinse your body well with lukewarm water, and follow with cold water.
- After stepping out of the shower, buff dry, apply a natural moisturizing body lotion all over.
- Use a natural moisturizer once a day. You want to keep your new skin cells hydrated.
Stay away from moisturizers enriched with collagen, there is much debate about how well topical collagen is absorbed into the skin, if it is even usable at the molecular level.
Also, go natural with your body lotion. If you’re putting dangerous ingredients on your skin, you can bet those are getting into your body—exactly where they don’t belong.

#7. Looking good with collagen.
The results are very compelling, the collagen has improved my skin’s moisture all over my body, my skin feels more supple and it is glowing.
When I began this trial, I also switched my fitness routine to swimming,
I remember standing by the edge of the pool, wearing a baggy pair of trainer pants over my swimsuit. I was there to begin my challenge towards a firmer derriere which I desperately wanted, but I couldn’t bring myself to strip down.
I knew I had two options: go back home or own the problem and dive in. I peeled off my pants and hit the water like a girl on a mission.
Moving forward three months and there's one glorious high cut swimsuit that I am going to go buy, why? My derriere is slender and toned.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the great changes that are taking place, but my skin is glowing, my hair is glossy, the skin under my eyes seems to be thicker and less lined, I am a convert!
Experts say a healthy diet and supplement regimen can go a long way toward beating the clock, I could not agree more.
#8. Final word, please be kind to our planet and your body.
Plastic microbead based body scrubs may dry, damage or tear sensitive skin, but that is not the worst of it. These tiny plastic beads (listed as polyethylene and polypropylene in the ingredients) are used in face & body scrubs and toothpaste. They are washed directly down the drain and into our water systems, where they harm our waterways and the animals that live there. It is one of the most dangerous sources of plastic pollution, and it is poisoning our oceans – globally.
