While we New Zealanders are stocking up the wood pile, and dusting off our log burners in preparation for winter, the northern hemisphere is getting ready to embrace the longer, warmer days of summer.
I love summer and it is certainly not called the season of skin for nothing! With the increased exposure of skin, comes a whole host of summer-related skin problems including but not limited to; sun damaged, dry, flaky, irritated skin.
I don’t know about you, but I definitely want to avoid having skin that looks like weathered buffalo hide! Here are my five go-to tips for glowing beautiful skin this summer.
1. Ditch acid for alkaline
Excess acid found in foods like cheese, meat, eggs and sugars can lower your immune resistance and make your skin prone to inflammation. People with acid overload may be more likely to get sunburns, acne, eczema and premature skin aging.
Healthy skin tip: Avoid acid and raise your pH by eating alkaline foods like cucumber, wheatgrass, sweet potatoes, kale and broccoli. You can also make alkaline drinks by juicing cucumber and lemon. Lemon while commonly confused as being an acidic fruit, is actually alkaline in the body.
2. Move Often
Now that the weather is warming up, get out and get active. Activity increases your oxygen intake, circulates nutrients and reduces stress. Take a friend or family member – company makes everything even better.
Healthy skin tip: Toxin build-up in our bodies often manifests in breakouts and clogged pores. Drink plenty of water and get your sweat on to help your body release these toxins.
3. Relax and unwind
Take some time to watch the spring flowers and listen to the birds. Relaxing promotes optimal immune function and contributes to hormonal balance, resulting in fewer breakouts and brighter skin.
4. Eat to nourish
Nature has provided us with many different foods that help give our skin that beautiful glow. Increase your consumption of fatty acids, antioxidants and cleansing foods in the lead up to summer for clear, smooth and hydrated skin.
- Olive Oil
- Coconut oil
- White Tea
- Brightly coloured vegetables
- Dark chocolate
- Dark leafy greens
Healthy skin tip: Antioxidant supplements and foods are important to help your skin resist damage. We also have super antioxidants Astaxanthin and Lycopene in our Omega-3 Premium Fish Oil and Omega 3/QH Ultra Fish Oil which help support skin health.
5. Mask Up!
I love masks of all types but a must-do mask for summer is your sunblock mask! Many sunblocks contain harmful chemicals that can get absorbed into the bloodstream. To avoid this I suggest going for a zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunblock. These sit on the surface of your skin protecting them from UV rays without getting absorbed.
Healthy skin tip: Try out our “post-sun” face mask for cool, clear and soothed skin.
Xtend-Life’s Aloe Cucumber Mask
The cooling compounds of both aloe vera and cucumber make them the perfect combination to soothe and cleanse puffy, inflamed skin. Paired with our Xtend-Life Age Defying Hydrating Mask, this is a winning combination for refreshed skin.
2 teaspoons of Xtend-Life Hydrating Mask
2 teaspoons of aloe vera gel or ½ aloe vera stalk
¼ small cucumber chopped (with skin and seeds removed)
Mix together in a blender or food processor and apply paste evenly to face, leave on for 30 minutes before washing off with warm water.
