To be honest, until recently I didn’t know much about microbeads. This is something that I believe I should have known more about previously. I had not done enough research.
It turns out I had been using facial scrubs that contained microbeads for a number of years and I never once thought to wonder what they were actually made of. If pressed I suppose I would have assumed they were the facewash itself, though hardened perhaps? I would never have guessed that they are plastic. I mean, why would manufacturers put plastic in something I put on my face and which is flushed away in waste water? That’s just crazy.
But yes, those tiny balls are plastic; and that’s not the worst bit. It turns out these microbeads are so small, they are not able to be filtered out by wastewater treatment plants. As they are plastic, they are not biodegradable and once they enter the marine environment, they are impossible to remove.
This means that all those little beads that exist purely to make the product pretty or make your skin feel just that little bit nicer eventually make their way into the sea and other waterways where they get ingested by fish and other marine life. This in turn, gets passed along the food chain and will end up in our food.
I was rather shocked when I realized that in our quest to care for our skin, we created something that not only harms the environment, but marine life too. Since some of these microbeads are so small and are hardly visible to the naked eye, many of us are using these microbeads without even realizing it! And it turns out that these microbeads may also be lurking in some of our toothpaste, laundry powder and even nail polish!
Thankfully some governments are now taking action to ban microbeads from these products. This is happening globally with the US and the Netherlands leading the charge.
Here at Xtend-Life, we are passionate about boosting ocean conservation awareness through our www.xtendoceanlife.org website and are strongly against ingredients that could potentially harm our waterways.
When formulating our new exfoliator for our skin care range, this was one of our top priorities, making our choice of natural exfoliating ingredients an easy one.
Our Age-Defying Exfoliating Scrub is packed full of ingredients to help exfoliate, refine and renew the skin. The combination of rhyolite exfoliator (comprised of course and fine pumice grounds) and powdered apple peel, helps to gently polish away dead skin cells and is more gentle than the traditional ingredients used in exfoliating scrubs.
We are breaking away from the perception of exfoliators only being for young, acne and oily prone skin. While anyone with those skin types can use this product, it is also formulated with moisture-rich emollients and beautifully soothing oils and extracts that nourish the skin without leaving it greasy. It is the perfect product for your skin as it helps to buff away dead cells to bring younger brighter-looking cells to the surface.
Grab an exfoliator in your order today and let us know your thoughts. I am sure you will love it as much as I do!
In good health.
