About 12 years ago I wrote an article about Medical Errors being the 3rd largest cause of death in the USA (Ref. 1). Since then there has been numerous articles on the subject all reaffirming the sad statistics of deaths which should have been preventable...due to wrong interventions either by way of surgery or incorrect medication or, even ‘correct’ medication interacting with another contributing to death.
These statistics which first became public about 12 years ago have not really improved much. Hospitals can be dangerous places...but unfortunately, for many people they are essential. A lot of people do owe there lives to hospitals and the staff who work in them.
Sadly many people who end up in hospital would never have had to go there if they had treated their body as the wonderful, self healing ‘machine’ that it is. In other words treated it kinder by way of ensuring that it had the nutrients that it needed and kept it moving by way of exercise. But, that is not the subject of this blog post.
What I wanted to convey to you today is that it is not only hospitals that can be dangerous places but also facilities that care for the elderly...in other words skilled nursing facilities.
Recently the Inspector General of the US. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) conducted a study focusing on skilled nursing care. The results were alarming, and this is why I am raising it today. They found that one third of skilled nursing patients were harmed. If you have family in nursing care then it would be prudent to read the report below and then follow up with the nursing home to be certain your family member is getting the level of care you expect.
