It is often the tiny humble looking plants that turn out to be the most extraordinary, either nutritionally or medicinally.
Extrapone Nutgrass is one of those plants.
Native to China and India, this small grassy plant has been used for thousands of years as a natural skin whitener and as a natural way to lighten the skin. This is due to its melanin inhibiting qualities. However, Nutgrass doesn’t just lighten and remove freckles and age spots; it can also help even the skin tone, resulting in a more balanced complexion.
Extrapone Nutgrass, also known as Cyperus Rotundus, contains several pharmacologically active ingredients, including β-pinene, cyperene, α-cyperone, β-cyperone and α-cyperol. It also contains alkaloids, flavonoids and triterpenes. It is not toxic.
So what are age spots and how does Extrapone Nutgrass work?
What we have come to know as ‘age spots’ are actually small areas of sun-damaged skin. Exposure to ultraviolet rays damages our skin cells and after prolonged & repeated exposure, our skin defence system short-circuits and produces what is known as melanin hyper-pigmentation. A similar mechanism also causes people with pale, sun-sensitive skin to develop freckles and those with olive skin – to develop a tan.
As we get older, our skin’s ability to repair itself diminishes so we need the support of a good quality, skincare cream to support the skin and ward off uneven pigmentation.
The Indian and Chinese people have known for centuries that the rejuvenating qualities of Extrapone Nutgrass are not just cosmetic. Extrapone Nutgrass actually contains anti-aging properties for the skin. However, to activate these properties, Nutgrass creams must contain a powdered extract of the roots, prepared in water and glycerine. In this form the effect of the nutgrass root is enhanced.
So what’s the catch? There isn’t one. Except we must remember, no matter how effective a nutgrass cream may be in warding off the effects of exposure, or aging - to get the most out of any skincare product, we should avoid basking in the sun, never use tanning beds, eat a nutritious diet and get plenty of rest.
