I love seafood. In fact, I love it so much that I could eat easily eat fish for breakfast, lunch and supper. My passion for seafood is shared by my wife. She’s Portuguese so you can imagine the amount of delicious seafood meals we regularly enjoy, like grilled sardines on the BBQ and my favorite…a tasty and healthy Portuguese seafood stew called ‘caldeirada’.
You’d think that with all this seafood, my family would be fine in terms of receiving enough omega 3 fatty acids per day. Well, we do get a good amount omega 3 but believe it or not, it’s still not enough.
The proteins and other nutrients we get from our high seafood diet may be good but in terms of optimizing our DHA intake, there’s simply no substitute for a daily regime of Omega 3 DHA Fish Oil.
As you may know, DHA is the real McCoy as far as omega 3s are concerned. It’s the primary component of the human brain and it’s the omega 3 fatty acid that you want for you and your family.
Eating lots of seafood may increase your daily intake of EPA and DHA, but unless you know exactly where your fish is sourced from, you may be at some risk of potential mercury poisoning or an increased intake of PCBs.
Living in New Zealand, we’re blessed with the pristine and clean Southern Ocean being right on our door-step. During my wife’s recent pregnancy, we weren’t concerned about eating locally caught fish because the purity of New Zealand’s seafood is unrivalled to anywhere else in the world. However, we wanted to ensure that she received an optimal amount of DHA not only during her pregnancy but also while she was nursing our newborn son.
I understand that some people may find it difficult to know exactly where their seafood is sourced, let alone enjoy fresh fish that hasn’t been frozen for days. This makes it all that more important to supplement daily with a fish oil that is high in DHA.
By taking Omega 3 DHA Fish Oil, we optimized her daily DHA intake which ensured that our son received a healthy amount for his brain development, as well as ensuring that her daily levels were in check. This meant that we could still enjoy our regular seafood feasts, safe in the knowledge that everyone was receiving optimal doses of omega 3s, especially DHA…and without the worry of PCBs and other toxins.
Four months on since my son was born, nothing has changed. Our diet remains the same and both mother and child are exceptionally healthy and content. I’m convinced that eating a Mediterranean diet that is high in seafood, extra virgin olive oil and vegetables…combined with Omega 3 DHA Fish Oil contributed to their health and wellness…not to mention mine as well!
