Vinpocetine Background and Benefits

green-coffee-beanVinpocetine is derived from vincamine, an alkaloid found in the lesser periwinkle plant. This flowering plant originates from central and southern Europe, as well as southwestern Asia. The lesser periwinkle plant is also known for other names such as the common periwinkle, dwarf periwinkle, myrtle and creeping myrtle.

Vinpocetine is known scientifically as ethyl apovincaminate and is also sold under various brand names such as Cavinton and Intelectol. The Hungarian chemist Csaba Szántay first isolated vinpocetine in 1975 and commercial production of the drug began in 1978.

The primary biochemical action of vinpocetine is to inhibit sodium channels in the nerve endings that are sensitive to voltage. Researchers believe this action provides a supporting effect from the excessive stimulation of neurons caused by neurotransmitters like glutamate. Vinpocetine is also a vasodilator for smooth muscle tissue in the cerebrum.

Vinpocetine is typically used for age-related memory recall support and maintain healthy brain function, although its regulation varies significantly by country.

Uses of Vinpocetine

The most common uses of vinpocetine relate to its potential for supporting healthy circulation to the brain. This effect may make it useful for maintaining healthy mental function.

Memory support

Some early studies show that vinpocetine may also help to support memory recall in healthy adults.

Age-defying support

Vinpocetine is typically used for the support of brain function that often comes with aging. It may also be helpful in those who need additional support to cope with bouts of stress, low moods and manage frustration.

Preliminary research shows that vinpocetine may be beneficial for maintaining healthy eye function in older people. This use of vinpocetine often consists of taking oral supplements for at least two months.

Urine control

Some studies show that oral administration of vinpocetine for at least two weeks may reduce the number of times that you need to urinate at night.

Signs You May Need Vinpocetine

A decline in mental functioning due to age is one of the most common signs that you may benefit from vinpocetine. These signs primarily include the need for additional support for memory recall, but also learning and general alertness. Many researchers believe that vinpocetine supports healthy circulation to the brain, which provides the brain with more oxygen. This property indicates that people with low levels of thyroid hormone could also benefit from vinpocetine.
