Question: From Chris. (Subject: Biopolar...)q1

I started the Fish oil softgels a few weeks ago, and now feel impressed sufficiently to try the Total Balance product.

I was diagnosed as Bipolar a year ago, and have been on Lithium and stable ever since. But from about November to January I get "seasonal blues"--lower energy and motivation, low grade depression, so I am anxious to try the Total Balance product. I also wondered if you had any literature or any other product that addresses Bipolar disorder, or depression.

Answer: From Nicolien.

Taking the Omega 3/DHA fish oil will indeed be very beneficial for you. Other nutrients that will help you with Bipolar depression are: phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine as present in lecithin and also phosphatidylserine. We include a small dose (75 mg/ daily dose) of lecithin in our Total Balance. However, we have a much higher dose in our Neurological formula (160mgs/day) along with 100mgs of phosphatidylserine.

Other nutrients that will benefit you are the B-vitamins, L-tryptophan or 5-HTP, L-tyrosine along with a comprehensive multi vitamin/mineral combination plus anti-oxidants.

I would propose that you consider adding our Total Balance and our Neurological formula to your supplement regime. In other words, in addition to our Omega 3 and lithium! Just a half dose of each (3 tablets per day, or one bottle of each per month) could really help you. This is because they contain all the nutrients that I mentioned above, plus a lot more.

Have a look at the ingredients in these two products and you will get a better appreciation of how comprehensive they are. These two products as with all our range were designed to complement each other. You can click through to the relative links by starting off at this page.

You could also take a few tablespoons of lecithin daily in your food as well. You can buy lecithin granules at the local health food store.

If you are interested in reading an extensive article on bipolar depression, go to www.findarticles.com, then choose "health and fitness", then choose "Alternative Medicine Review", then type in search " bipolar", you will then find an article by Parris Kidd. It may be interesting for you to read.

Question: From Roberto. (Subject: Ineffective tablets?)q2

I have read several articles which say that multi vitamins in hard tablet form are ineffective because their nutrients are compressed with about 50,000 pounds of pressure and therefore they lose efficacy. Could you tell me why Total Balance tablets are different?

Answer: From Warren.

It is not so much the pressure that causes a problem, although excessive pressure can contribute to the inability of a tablet to disintegrate. The other major contributing factor is the excipients that are used. Cheap excipients or binders combined with excessive pressure in order to hold everything together can result in a tablet so hard and 'impervious' that it can result in the tablet passing right through the digestive system thus giving no benefits at all.

We use pressure much less than 50,000 lbs but we use more sophisticated excipients, which are a lot more expensive. But... on the other hand we are able to use less of them, but the manufacturing process is more complex and the production rate is a lot slower.

But…we do something that is not normally done in the supplement industry and that is we test every batch for dissolution based on pharmaceutical British pharmacopeia's standards. These are tested to ensure that they breakdown within the BP guidelines.

So, in summary we do not use the methods employed by manufacturers of cheap mass produced vitamins but rather employ similar standards to those used by pharmaceutical tablets.

Question: From Judy. (Subject: Tamoxifen...)q3

Is it safe to use Tamoxifen with Total Balance? I found that citrus flavonoids are supposed to be contra-indicated with Tamoxifen, is that true?

Answer: From Nicolien.

Because of some contradictory info on this matter I consulted with Prof. Dr. A Munem on this question. He advises me that all the ingredients in TB will work with Tamoxifen, and benefit you overall. He tells me that Tamoxifen and the citrus flavonoid tangeretin exhibit similar inhibitory effects on the growth and invasive properties of human mammary cancer cells in vitro; furthermore, the two agents have displayed additive effects in vitro.

So, you can take Total Balance with confidence.
